MUTTON IS LAMB THAT IS RAISED OUT TO 18-24 months vs. 10-13 months. We want the lamb to have more fat and meat on it so we can enjoy it medicinally vs. cooking for ART. We like the microfat that develops to offer more medicine and to tenderize and add more flavor to the meat. MUTTON is also LESS GAMEY than young lamb. MUTTON is more purposeful for day to day nourishment.
Meadow Wood Farm Lamb/Mutton Ground
Located in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley, Meadow Wood Farm is committed to producing high quality, nutritionally dense, delicious lamb. Raised entirely on native grasses our Katahdin hair sheep have a tender, mild flavor giving the lamb a wide array of culinary uses. Our sheep are given free choice of minerals and are moved frequently onto fresh grass equally distributing their impact across the land.
Meadow Wood Farm is owned and operated by Shane Murrow and Jessie Linton. Shane grew up in Northwest Oklahoma on his family farm that ran for four generations, through the Depression and Dust Bowl. In 2016, Shane relocated to the Valley to learn holistic, regenerative farming practices at Polyface Farm. In 2018, Shane started Meadow Wood Farm while continuing to contract farm for Polyface. After studying environmental conservation and sustainability at James Madison University, Jessie joined the Peace Corps and served two years teaching sustainable agriculture and agroforestry in Senegal, West Africa. When Jessie returned home she worked on a flower farm in Nelson County and a livestock farm in Warrenton, before settling in Swoope at Meadow Wood with Shane.
